Course Overview

Apprenticeship standards are employer-led, meaning that employers can specify exactly what’s required from an apprentice in each specific role. Apprenticeship standards outline the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to carry out a certain job role, which are delivered and carried out both in the workplace, through teaching & learning and independent learning.

All the skills, knowledge and behaviours must be met for you to achieve your successful Apprenticeship. Some of these standards involve additional qualifications that must be completed in order to achieve the knowledge elements in full.

Employers within the Automotive industry have designed the approved apprenticeship Standard for technicians who service and repair heavy vehicles.

Role profile – A motor vehicle service and maintenance technician services and repairs light vehicles such as cars and vans and works either in dealerships which focus on a particular manufacturer, or in an independent garage which deals with many different makes of vehicles.

Duration 36 months

It is expected that it will typically take three years for the apprentice to attain the required level of competence in the workplace although it may be less if the individual already has significant training and practical experience.

This course is delivered onsite every week on Mondays, giving learners the chance to study in a structured classroom environment with consistent and immediate hands-on tutor guidance. These frequent face-to-face sessions provide crucial opportunities for deep discussion, rapid feedback on practical activities, and regular peer collaboration. Between sessions, learners can reinforce their weekly learning and prepare for the next class independently using our comprehensive online resources, ensuring continuous momentum and high levels of engagement throughout the course.

Assessment overview

Skills, knowledge and behaviours are assessed by competencies being displayed in the workplace, observations, employer feedback, assessor progress reviews, evidence collating and the employer enabling you to fulfil the requirements of your Apprenticeship.

On programme assessment will include various coaching and mentoring assessment methods. These assessments are designed to review the behaviours, knowledge and skills against set gateway criteria. In addition you, your employer and the college are required to maintain an off the job training log evidencing new skills and knowledge being learnt over the duration of the apprenticeship.

The final grading of the apprenticeship will be carried out through an End Point Assessment, by an independent assessor.
