CONSTRUCTION SKILLS WEEK A HUGE SUCCESS

News overview

Last week saw the Level One Construction students at Slough & Langley College enjoy an insightful skills week, welcoming many guests from the construction industry.

Students sat through CV workshops, career talks, and had exciting hands-on experience from a number of local companies.

The week began with Chelsie Ratcliffe-Cull, Early Careers Manager at Overbury and Morgan Lovell, demonstrating how to create a strong CV to the Carpentry students.

On Monday afternoon, the Multi-Trade and Electrical classes had a talk from local National Trust attraction Cliveden House, where they heard about the Electrical side to running the Manor House and grounds.

The rain cleared in time for Tuesday’s practical activities, which allowed them the chance to have a go at some real-world experiences. BAM Construction Training brought their Excavator and Tipping Dumper along, where the students learned how to drive them, and tutors from Lee Marley Scaffolding taught everyone how to construct scaffolding safely. Inside, QTech were giving a demonstration on how to use their Sprayer to paint walls and doors efficiently.

Wednesday saw two more companies come in to close the programme, with Cardo Group giving an insightful careers talk, whilst MBS Equipment brought some production lighting equipment for the Electrical students to explore.

Graeme Forrest, Assistant Principal Engineering & Structural Technologies, said:

“Enabling our students the opportunity to immerse themselves into industry activities is key to everyone young person’s future career opportunities.

At TWFCG, every effort is made to develop essential skills and we’re focused on building strong relationships with our industry partners to ensure our students are work-ready and trained in the relevant skills needed by employers.

With initiatives like Skills Week, we are building a focused approach to encourage involvement of industry experts that will help inform our curriculum content and prepare our students for the world of work, so they leave us prepared and skilled for the construction jobs of the future.”

Owen Taylor, Head of Department for Structural Technologies, added:

“I was impressed by how well the students took everything in with such a busy schedule, and we are excited to look at how to include more activities like these in our curriculum. A huge thank you to everyone involved.”

Thank you to all the suppliers who supported our Slough & Langley Construction Skills Week, and to the team for creating an enjoyable experience for the students.
