CONSTRUCTION SKILLS WEEK CONNECTS STUDENTS WITH LEADING INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS!

News overview

Our construction skills students enjoyed an inspiring and action packed week of learning, thanks to a series of exceptional guest speakers from leading names in the construction and related industries.

The week began with Neal Allison, Social Value Manager at Cardo Group, who delivered an insightful presentation to our Level 1 Construction students. Neal enthusiastically spoke about Cardo’s strong relationship with the college and how they support many of our students with Industry Placements, several of which have led to Apprenticeships. He also shared what they look for in potential candidates and explained their application process.

Next, our students heard from Carly Seymour, Engagement Lead and Mental Health Advisor from ‘Kooth’. With Kooth already working closely with our college’s Safeguarding and Pastoral teams, Carly’s presentation served as a great introduction for our new students. She emphasised the importance of talking about mental health and helped students recognise and understand what it means to them.

The insights continued on Tuesday with a fantastic careers talk, demo, and display from MBS Equipment for our Level 1 Electrical Students. As one of our top employers, MBS Equipment has consistently supported our Construction students with Industry Placements and has now extended that support to our IT T Level students. They provided a great insight into exciting career opportunities, including the chance to work overseas, inspiring our students to progress to the next level.

The industry talks concluded on Wednesday with two more fantastic presentations. First, our Level 1 Multi Trade Students heard from Martin Gow, Maintenance General Manager at the MacDonald Hotel in Windsor. The hotel has been a great supporter of our students, offering industry placements that have even resulted in part-time employment. Martin gave a wonderful presentation and provided insight into construction opportunities within the hospitality sector, highlighting the skills expected and the rewards of working for a prestigious hotel.

To round off the week, Petar Gemovic, an Automation Technician at SSE Power, shared his inspiring career journey with our students. He spoke about his path to his current role and highlighted potential work experience, apprenticeship, and internship opportunities available for our students at SSE.

A huge thank you to all our guest speakers for giving their time and expertise to inspire our students and making our Construction Skills Week such a memorable and valuable experience!
