On Monday, the Travel and Tourism students at Slough and Langley College welcomed some guest speakers from BCD Travel, which included two former students.
Frankie and Scarlett both finished their studies with us over the summer, and have progressed into an Apprenticeship role in BCD’s Media & Entertainment team. We caught up with them to find out a bit more about life after College, and working in the industry.
Why did you join the Travel and Tourism course?
Scarlett initially enrolled at Slough and Langley College on another course, but changed to Travel and Tourism after just two weeks: “I realised it wasn’t the right path for me. I felt something was missing. A friend who was also at Langley encouraged me to explore the Travel and Tourism course, and as I learned more about it, I discovered how closely it aligned with my interests. I decided to switch, and from that moment on, I truly enjoyed my college experience. The support from both peers and teachers created a nurturing environment where I felt safe and respected as I pursued my passion for travel.”
Frankie chose the course due to her love for travel: “When I learned about the course’s extensive curriculum, I was excited to find a program that covers so much of the industry. Friends of mine who were enrolled also spoke highly of the supportive teachers, which made me feel confident that I would receive the guidance I need to succeed. Overall, Langley felt like the ideal place to pursue my passion and build a career in travel and tourism.”
How did the course help you get an apprenticeship?
Whilst they were studying, Frankie and Scarlett were both selected for a two-week industry placement at BCD. This is something that the College is especially proud of, partnering with local businesses in the industry to allow students to gain valuable real-life experience.
Frankie says she approached the opportunity with enthusiasm and professionalism as she recognised how important it was to make a strong impression. From there, she was able to apply the knowledge that she had gained during the course into a real-world setting, developing and practicing her skills and gaining insights into the industry.
After learning from the professionals throughout her industry placement, they both knew that they wanted to apply for a place on BCD’s Apprenticeship Programme and were thrilled to be accepted after interview.
What are the most exciting things you do on your apprenticeship?
Scarlett has been looking at how the Global Distribution System (GDS) operates, and how they streamline the booking process for Travel Agents: “The Travel industry is rapidly evolving, and I find it exhilarating to be part of both its present and its future. My curiosity drives me to learn about different cultures, languages, technologies, and geographical aspects of the world.”
Meanwhile Frankie is enjoying the new challenges that she’s been presented with, as she explores the world of booking flights, hotels, and cars for clients.
They have both loved meeting other people in the company, from senior figures, suppliers and partners from across the world, all the way through to their fellow Apprentices. Scarlett believes that meeting new people and gaining insights from various perspectives is enriching her understanding of the industry, whilst Frankie said: “I truly appreciate working with such kind people, which makes this experience even more rewarding!”
Finally, what is your aim for the future?
Scarlett is excited to learn more about herself as she continues to grow and gain independence in her work. She’s also looking forward to travelling and seeing more of the world, which would help her understand the industry further. Frankie is aiming to blossom in her career at BCD, excited about the things that she can learn and experience with the company. With so many opportunities for growth, she can’t wait to embrace the warm and inspiring environment at BCD and seeing how the journey goes.
Thank you to both Frankie and Scarlett for taking the time to talk about their transition from college to their new working life.
