Course Overview

This course is aimed at anyone seeking to improve their understanding and awareness of suicide and self-harm. The knowledge gained can be applied to a broad range of personal and professional situations. It may be useful to those individuals in a safeguarding role, parents or guardians, and others working with individuals who may be at increased risk of self-harm or suicide or professions such as teachers, mental health workers, crisis helpline volunteers, support workers. Safeguarding of learners emotional and physical wellbeing is taken exceptionally seriously. Some aspects covered can be upsetting for learners and, although every effort to include trigger warnings where appropriate, it is important to acknowledge that we cannot know or understand potential triggers for all learners. Our courses are designed to provide training and further knowledge and should not be undertaken as a form of non clinical therapeutic intervention or counselling.

This is an online course that requires independent study, therefore applicants must have internet access and their own suitable device such as PC or laptop. The college are unable to supply equipment. Please note a smart phone is not sufficient to study from for this course.

Course information

Unit 1: Introduction to suicide and self-harm awareness
Unit 2: Recognising the signs of suicide and self-harm in individuals
Unit 3: The principles of suicide and self-harm prevention
Unit 4: Support for individuals when dealing with grief after suicide

Study anytime, anywhere. We would recommend at least 2-3 hrs per week of self-study, depending on your prior knowledge. One of our tutors will email with you once you start the online course and will make regular contact with you. Their role is to assist you throughout the qualification and monitor your progress. We also encourage you to contact your tutor when needed. On average the course takes 8-12 weeks to complete depending on the time you can dedicate to it. Maximum time allowed will be 16 weeks from the date you are first enrolled.

This remote online learning course allows you to study around your commitments and at a time that suits you. You will have the freedom to revisit areas of the course as little or as much as you like using online learning materials that you can study at your own pace. Commitment to study time is key to a successful outcome and timely success. Ensure you review your progress regularly and do not hesitate to make contact with your tutor if additional support is needed.

Immediate starts are possible once your application has been processed. You will be working through an elearning platform so it is essential that you have access to your own suitable device (laptop, PC, tablet, not a mobile phone), as well as good internet access.

The course consists of online assessments, in order to keep your learning on track you will receive automated reminders for submissions, please liaise with you coach/tutor should you have any questions about completing in a timely fashion. Submission of learner work will be followed by internal and external quality assurance checks.

TQUK accredited level 2 qualification. E-certificates will be issued upon achievement and successful quality assurance checks.
